American Josiah Middaugh won the XTERRA U.S. Pro Series for the third straight year, and was runner-up in the world championship two of past three years. He comes to Maui this year with the confidence from a late-season winning streak: "I feel stronger than last year; I think I can do it."
American Emma Garrard won the XTERRA USA Championship and the U.S. Pro Series this year. She was 4th in Maui in 2014, missing the podium by less than 30 seconds. The Park City resident has been the top American woman in Maui the past two years, and was 5th in 2013. Garrard talks about her consistent season, the rewards of the XTERRA lifestyle, and the pressures as a top American performer in Maui.
After overcoming some significant adversity these past couple of seasons, including a Lyme disease diagnosis, depression and a broken wrist and shoulder from crashes, the "Scottish Rocket" is back in Maui after missing the 2014 race to contend for the XTERRA world title. Despite the challenges thrown at her, the two-time XTERRA world champ (2011-12) won XTERRA Costa Rica (after getting through the swim using only one arm), as well as the West and Southeast Championship races in addition to the European Championship in England this season.
The reigning world champ from Spain has won an unprecedented 15 straight XTERRA majors since winning his first world title in 2013. The former pro mountain biker also just won his second straight ITU Cross World title. Ruzafa has won every time he's started in Maui (2008, 2013, 2014).
