12 Days Of Holiday Giveaways: Day 5

To win today’s giveaway, put your triathlon trivia knowledge to the test against Ironman hall of famer Bob Babbitt! Answer these trivia questions from Bob correctly in the comments below, and we’ll randomly select a winner. The entries much be on this post. Answers must be posted by Wednesday, Nov. 27 at Noon PST. The winner will be announced on this page by 5 p.m. PST the same day.

1. Being Movember, this question is particularly appropriate. From 1978 through 1987, every male winner of the Ironman World Championship sported facial hair but one. Which winner was it and what year was it?

The correct answer is Scott Tinley, a guy famous for his mustache. But he went without facial hair for his second Ironman World Championship title in 1985.

2. Name the first woman to finish the Ironman World Championship. The bonus question: What year was it? Lyn Lemaire in 1979

3. Name the beach where the first and second Ironman World championship was held. San Souci Beach  (We also accepted Waikiki Beach.)

4. What year were there actually two Ironman Triathlon World Championship events? 1982

5. What athlete graced the cover of the first ever edition of Triathlete magazine back in May of 1983? Dean Harper (Many of you Dave Scott, who was on the cover of the first Triathlon magazine.)

6. Who was the first non-American male to win the Ironman World championship and what year was it? Greg Welch from Australia in 1994

7. Between 1986 and 1996, Paula Newby-Fraser and Erin Baker won 10 of the 11 titles in Kona. Who won the other title and what year was it? Karen Smyers in 1995

8. Since 1990, name all of the Ironman World Champions who won in their very first attempt in Kona.
