Three-time Ironman world champion Craig “Crowie” Alexander is among the first round of pro triathletes (74 of them) to accept their entry for the 2014 Ironman World Championship. In finish line interviews after tough finishes in both 2012 (12th) and 2013 (21st), Alexander said he was undecided if he would return to the Hawaii Ironman. With his son’s school start in Australia delayed by a year, Alexander decided with his family that he would validate at Ironman Melbourne in March (he finished fifth) to leave open the possibility of starting in Kona this October. However, that start remains tentative as Alexander progresses through his biggest training blocks at his Boulder, Colo. base and monitors how his body responds. “The heart and lungs are as strong as they’ve ever been, but the chassis doesn’t recover like it used to,” he told Triathlete.com.
Alexander said that, ultimately, he will make a decision based on his sense of health and fitness leading into Kona and would like to not detract from the spotlight that his competitors have earned from strong seasons that earned them a place on the Ironman World Championship start line.
