Ironman today announced two new 70.3 events in the Middle East region, one in Bahrain and one in Dubai.
The Iroman 70.3 Middle East Championship will take place in Bahrain on Dec. 5, 2015, followed by the Ironman 70.3 Dubai triathlon in early 2016.
“We are delighted to be able to establish Ironman 70.3 races in the Gulf region that is an emerging hotbed for triathlon,” said Andrew Messick, the Chief Executive Officer of Ironman, in a press release. “Besides having passionate triathletes, Bahrain and Dubai have demonstrated an extraordinary ability to host great events. We are looking forward to working with our partners to create some of the greatest races in the world—with the hope of expanding in this region.”
The Dec. 5 date for the 70.3 Bahrain race is the same date and location the Challenge Family had originally listed for the finale of its Triple Crown Series. Challenge Family had also hosted Challenge Bahrain last December, and featured a $500,000 prize purse. The organization already announced the cancellation of the second race in the Triple Crown, and now it looks like the third one is in jeopardy as well.
