At a press event in New York City on Thursday morning, adidas unveiled the new Ultra Boost—a running shoe the 65-year-old German company is calling “the best ever made.”
The shoe, which weighs in at just under 11 ounces in a men’s size 9 and has a 10 mm drop (30.5mm/20.5mm stack heights), features a new Ultra Boost foam, a proprietary cushioning platform packed with 3,000 energy capsules compared to the 2,000 found in the standard boost foam that graces most of the rest of adidas’ robust running shoe lineup. The new midsole foam is said to be more temperature resistant than traditional midsoles, which helps it to provide a consistent feel in a variety of conditions. Spokespeople from adidas say the Ultra Boost foam provides unmatched energy return from the ground mile after mile. Its midsole is designed to feel consistent underneath your feet throughout the life of the shoe—that’s right, it claims to ride just as well at mile 500 as it did at mile 5. We haven’t been able to wear-test the shoe yet to substantiate this impressive boast, but stay tuned for an upcoming review on Competitor.com for a full overview on how this shoe fits, feels and rides.
Aside from introducing an improved midsole technology, the Ultra Boost’s lightweight upper is made of a material called Primeknit, a carefully engineered mesh that keeps your foot locked in place while reducing irritation and providing superior ventilation in a variety of conditions. Underneath, the shoe’s new stretch web outsole is designed to support the foot’s natural movements while providing an enhanced feel for the ground that can adapt to a variety of surfaces.
The new Ultra Boost will retail for $180 and is available beginning on Feb. 1.
