Shimano TR-5

Though sometimes lost in the mix of sexier brands, Shimano has long put out a very solid (and consistent) entry/intermediate-level tri shoe.

New perk! Get after it with local recommendations just for you. Discover nearby events, routes out your door, and hidden gems when you sign up for the Local Running Drop.

Boasting the same fit that generally suits wide-footed triathletes better than someone with narrow needs, the Shimano TR-5 is a great choice when you might be wearing socks (or not, a decent sockless liner works wonders), you know your feet swell, or you just want more room for less possible pinching.

For less than $150, the Shimano TR-5 also has all of the essential tri-specific features like an outward-opening main strap, killer ventilation (but probably on the warmer side of the scale), and a giant heel loop for those who haven’t mastered the art of the slipper slip-on. Reinforcement at key areas on the heel and toe mean that you’ll likely upgrade to something lighter or tighter way before you actually wear these out.
