As part of their “2015 Velo Awards,” our friends at Velonews.com share the two best reasons to ride indoors.

Best reason to ride indoors: Zwift

The basement sweat room is a special kind of punishment, but Zwift has made the winter doldrums tolerable with an online platform that uses video game mechanics to let you race against fellow Zwifters around the world—each of you represented on screen by a customizable avatar. You can even Strava your segments. The hi-def graphics and ability to let Zwift control the resistance of certain connected trainers definitely add to the fun. But we’d still like to see some Mario Kart-type lightening bolts or banana peels we could hurl at the avatars of anyone who passes us.

Second-best reason to ride indoors: Wahoo Kickr Snap

How is Wahoo’s Kickr Snap different from its popular smart-trainer sibling, the Kickr? Both offer Ant+ and Bluetooth connectivity for computer-controlled resistance. But the Snap’s wheel-on design and 10.5 pound resistance flywheel—as compared to the Kickr’s 12.5-pound unit that offers more inertia, max wattage, and incline—knocks $400 off the price.
