Gear Review: Giro Empire

For a flawless fit, Giro’s lace-up cycling shoe is hard to beat.

For a flawless fit, Giro’s lace-up cycling shoe is hard to beat.

Why a lace-up cycling shoe? Style primarily, but the Empire is more than just a fashion statement. Its grip on the foot is impeccable, locking both the heel and mid-foot into place. The toe box is slightly broader, creating a sturdy but unconstricting fit. While the lace-up closure offers a less customizable fit from the arch to the toe box, it firmly secures the foot in place. Just don’t expect to be able to adjust mid-ride if your feet swell. Eliminating the plastic buckles also saves mass—at just 225 grams, the Empire is one of the most comfortable and sturdy featherweight shoes available.
