Race morning in Whistler presented cold (approximately 50 degrees F) temperatures and cloudy skies that eventually gave way to pouring rain, making for a tough day on the athletes. Ultimately it was Ukraine’s Viktor Zyemtsev and the United States’ Danielle Mack who got close wins on a tough day.
Men’s Race
Zyemtsev put together a 53:03 swim, a 4:58:32 bike and a 2:54:28 marathon to narrowly beat out South Africa’s Kyle Buckingham—who led much of the bike and run. Zyemtsev grabbed the tape at 8:49:46, with Buckingham following in second at 8:50:30. American Justin Daerr rounded out the top three at 8:54:45.
Women’s Race
Like Zyemtsev, Mack also claimed the top spot late in the race. She posted a 1:01:49 swim, a 5:23:53 bike and a 3:16:09 marathon to take the win in 9:46:19. Canada’s Melanie McQuaid posted the fastest bike split of the women (5:22:43) in her Ironman debut to lead much of the race. She was passed by Mack in the final miles, and had to settle for second at 9:48:23. Canada’s Jen Annett earned the final podium spot at 9:55:06.
