The newly popular sport of swimrun is coming to Boston this summer, with the inaugural SwimRun Boston Harbor Islands taking place on Saturday, June 16, 2018. The event follows in the footsteps of the Casco Bay Swimrun in Maine—which was established in 2016 and was inspired by the legendary swimrun race series ÖTILLÖ (island to island), which originated in Sweden in 2006.

The event is particularly challenging, with participants competing in teams of two, remaining together as they run across the tough terrain of each island before swimming to the next island, repeating the process until they reach the finish line and post-race party on Spectacle Island. The race is limited to the first 200 teams to sign up. Registration is open now.

ethos, the organizer of the Boston Triathlon and the Lobsterman Triathlon, will produce the event.

“From the moment I learned of the sport of swimrun and saw SwimRun Casco Bay Islands in Maine, I have wanted to bring this event to Boston,” said Michael O’Neil, president of ethos in the press release. “The Boston Harbor Islands are the perfect venue for this event, with their natural beauty and their close proximity to the magnificence of Boston. It’s going to be an incredible event.”

“We are excited to add Boston as a destination for SwimRun USA,” said Lars Finanger, co-founder of SwimRun USA. “In just three years, our Maine event has become a must-do race. With a large endurance community in Boston always looking for a challenge, we expect this race will quickly be added to that list as well. We can’t wait to see how people embrace this adventurous sport in a sporting mad city like Boston.”
