O’Donnell, Joyce Earn Big Wins at Ironman Boulder

Boulder provided a picturesque backdrop for athletes from around the world Sunday at the 2017 Ironman Boulder triathlon. Local professional triathletes Tim O’Donnell (USA) and Rachel Joyce (GBR) earned the victories on home territory with finishing times of 8:13:30 and 9:13:32, respectively.
Matt Chrabot (USA) finished in second place for the men with a time of 8:34:36, while Patrick McKeon (USA) rounded out the podium in third with a time of 8:42:24, respectively. On the women’s side, Heather Jackson (USA) finished second with a time of 9:20:42 and Danielle Mack (USA) finished third with a total time of 9:42:16.
Overall the race saw nearly 1,200 athletes representing 30 countries and 46 states start the race. Competitors ranged in age from 18–76 years old. The single-loop swim took place in the calm waters of the Boulder Reservoir, while the multi-loop bike course was entirely within Boulder County and featured amazing mountain views along with a handful of intermediate climbs. Athletes then enjoyed a two-loop run course through the Boulder community. The event offered a total professional prize purse of $80,000 and 40 age group qualifying slots to the 2017 Ironman World Championship.
