Germany’s Michael Raelert and Chile’s Barbara Riveros turned in dominating performances at Sunday’s Ironman 70.3 Berlin in Germany.
Despite a quiet start to the 2013 season for Raelert (right now he sits on the outside looking in for Kona qualification), he showed top form to earn the victory against a tough German field. His 23:59 swim, 2:04:13 bike and 1:16:51 were among the top times in each discipline. He claimed the win in 3:46:56. Gohner had a strong bike and run, but a weak swim kept him well behind Raelert throughout the race. He finished second in 3:51:30. Germany’s Per Bittner had a solid day across swim, bike and run to earn third.
London Olympian Riveros kicked her day off with a 26:48 swim and then went on to turn in a strong bike, posting a time of 2:21:34 and starting the run in second position. She passed Canada’s Rachel McBride on the run to earn the 4:16:10 victory. Germany’s Katja Konschak had by far the fastest run of the women to earn the runner-up spot. McBride held on for third.
