In a dominant performance, Australian Luke McKenzie took first place in the top international division at the 31st Father Joe’s San Diego International Triathlon on Sunday morning.

With a time of 1:27:20, McKenzie shattered last year’s finish time of 1:29:22 by Chris McDonald. Chris Foster, who completed the 5150 St. Louis Triathlon just Saturday morning, finished second at 1:28:25, also besting last year’s first-place finish.

McKenzie led the race from the start, only feeling he needed to look back at the competition a few times. He said it’s a strategy that has worked well for him recently.

“Went hard on the swim. Got on the bike and felt good. Rode really hard over the first 10Ks up the climb and just made sure to go out hard on the run to make sure these guys were out of contention,” McKenzie said moments after his finish. “I felt good. I traveled from Australia this last week so you never know how you’re going to go after you’ve traveled.”
