Life Time Tri Boulder Peak today announced a new competition that will take place within the iconic race on July 12 in Boulder, Colo. Race organizers will also be bringing back a fun, lighthearted award to “preserve the legacy of the event.”
Reach the Peak, the new King and Queen of the Mountain (KOM/QOM) style competition, will be a time trial from the beginning of the bike course to the top of Olde Stage Road—a legendary climb among triathletes. From the exit of T1, athletes will cross over a timing mat triggering the start of both their bike leg time, and the timed KOM/QOM segment. The finish line for the time trial is at the mailboxes at the top of Olde Stage Road. The 7-mile competition climbs to 6,500 feet with grades up to 15 percent. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest male and female over 40 and under 40, as well as the fastest male and female on a relay team. Only competitors who complete the triathlon or relay will be eligible for KOM/QOM prizes.
Additionally, Life Time will also be restoring the lighthearted “Longest Transition” award the Boulder Peak Tri traditionally gave to competitors, started by founder Paul Karlsson. The competitor who spends the most time in transition will receive the award that includes a lawn chair and a case of beer.
“The Boulder Peak Triathlon is an iconic local race and the addition of the ‘Reach The Peak’ competition creates a new, challenging component for participants that highlights one of the toughest climbs in an International distance triathlon,” said Scott Fliegelman, Boulder Peak Brand Manager and longtime Boulder triathlete and resident. “This is the 24th year of the Boulder Peak Triathlon and Life Time is excited and committed to preserving the local traditions and heritage of the race which is why we’re also excited to bring back the longest transition prize.”
