Aussie Leon Griffin and American Katie Hursey took the titles at the second Rev3 Maine in the town of Old Orchard Beach. Griffin won the race on the run, using a 33:27 10K to just edge out the runner-up by five seconds, and Hursey, who’s fresh off her first ITU World Cup win in Tiszaujvaros, won the women’s race by a two-minute margin. Each won $7,000 of the $50,000 pro prize purse at the Olympic-distance race.
Men’s Race
In the men’s race, a huge pack of men came out of the Atlantic Ocean together, including Chris Braden, who led the swim in a time of 19:48, Brian Fleischmann, Eric Limkemann, Kyle Leto, David Thompson and Leon Griffin, all within about 30 seconds of each other. On the bike, Thompson pushed the pace, and Limkemann, Griffin and Leto stuck with him while a chase back formed about two minutes back; Thompson had the fastest bike split of 55:26. All four men started the 10K run within 10 seconds of each other. On the run, Thompson and Griffin moved to the front and ran the final miles shoulder to shoulder while Limkemann and Leto fell off the pace. Griffin was able to gain the edge, winning the race in 1:53:06, just five seconds ahead of Thompson. Limkemann rounded out the podium.
Women’s Race
Radka Vodickova of the Czech Republic was first out of the water in a time of 20:39, and Hursey exited the swim 40 seconds back. On the bike, Lindsey Jerdonek made up time and had the fastest bike split of 1:01:37, and she started the run with both Vodickova and Hursey, while Goss started behind the three women—she reportedly had been leading the bike when she received a penalty. Hursey used her collegiate running speed to tick off an average of 5:37 miles (her 10K run split was 34:46) and pull away from the pack, giving her a two-minute margin of victory over runner-up Vodickova. Defending Rev3 Maine champion Goss used a 36:24 run to run her way onto the podium.
