Rev3 is gearing up for the fifth running of its flagship race this weekend in Middleburry, Conn. Several pros who have made this event a consistent part of their schedule and will be back for the fifth anniversary, including defending champions Richie Cunningham (AUS) and Mirinda Carfrae (AUS).
Men’s Race
Cunningham will face off against 2011 Rev3 series winner Andrew Starykowicz (USA). The super cyclist is coming off of a disappointing performance at Ironman 70.3 St. George and a seventh-place finish at Ironman 70.3 Mallorca and will be looking to return to the top of the podium. They’ll compete against former ITU stars Bevan Docherty (NZL) and Tim Don (GBR). One athlete who did have success in St. George and will be also competing at Quassy is U.S. 70.3 champion (and second-place finisher in Utah) Kevin Collington. With a similar course to St. George, Collington may be the favorite at this event. Also making the start are recent Wildflower podium finisher Joe Gambles (AUS) and Ironman Texas winner Paul Ambrose (AUS). Look for strong cyclists Andrew Yoder (USA) and Maik Twelsiek (GER) to also make their mark on this tough course.
Women’s Race
While the pro women’s start list is considerably shorter than the men’s, it still packs a punch and there are several women who could take the win. Carfrae has yet to show her true abilities in a race this year. She opened her season up with a crash at 70.3 San Juan and then headed to 70.3 California, where she received an unfortunate penalty and was taken out of contention early. From there she competed in two Olympic-distance events, which are not where the former 70.3 and Ironman world champion shine. Carfrae has competed at Quassy every year since the inaugural 2009 race and has won it every year except for 2011 when she lost to her rival (and good friend) Julie Dibens.
Ironman 70.3 St. George winner Meredith Kessler (USA) has had a nearly ideal start to the year and proved she can compete against the best earlier this month in Utah. One woman who has been unstoppable so far this year is Heather Jackson (USA). Can she repeat her performances from Escape From Alcatraz, Ironman 70.3 California and Wildflower? Finally, one to watch is American Kelly Williamson. She has continued to struggle to keep pace on the bike, but she consistently posts the best run splits in every race she enters and may use the half-marathon to put herself into contention.
