Lottery registration for the 35th anniversary of the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon opens Sept. 1.

If you’d like to race the 35th running of San Francisco’s Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon on June 7, 2015, save the date for Monday, Sept. 1, when registration for the lottery opens. The legendary triathlon caps out at 2,000 athletes every year, and about 1,700 of the total slots are filled through the two lottery drawings each fall.

“2015 marks the 35th year of the iconic Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, which continues to be a bucket list race for triathletes from around the world,” said IMG senior vice president James Leitz in a press release. “Since the first race back in 1980, the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon has skyrocketed in popularity as one of the most challenging races on today’s triathlon calendar.”

In fact, the race topped Triathlete.com’s list of “16 Bucket-List Triathlons (Outside of Kona)”—athletes are drawn because of the history, the challenge of swimming in the chilly San Francisco Bay and the major bragging rights. The prestigious race showcases the beauty of San Francisco starting with a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shoreline of Marina Green, an 18-mile hilly bike ride through the Presidio and an 8-mile trail run on Baker Beach and up the infamous Sand Ladder.

The lottery registration costs $25 and opens on Monday, Sept. 1 and closes Friday, Oct. 24. The first drawing will take place on Monday, Sept. 29, and the second drawing will be on Monday, Oct. 27. Anyone not chosen in the first drawing is automatically entered into the second drawing. Athletes can also enter the race by qualifying at one of five Escape to Alcatraz qualifying events or by attending one-day Escape Academy clinics. Learn more at Escapefromalcatraztriathlon.com.
