Viewing a solar eclipse is a once- or twice-in-a-lifetime experience, but imagine seeing such a phenomenon while competing in an endurance event! Athletes at the 2017 ITU Multisport World Championship Festival in Penticton, B.C., Canada got to do just that as the Standard Duathlon (10K run, 40K bike, 5K run) coincided with the cosmic event on Monday, Aug. 21. Though the Okanagan Lake Park didn’t experience totality, participants were treated to 80 percent coverage during the race. The eclipse in Penticton started at 9:12 a.m. and built to the greatest coverage at around 10:24 a.m., with it ending at 11:41 a.m.
Triathlon photographer Wagner Araujo is in Penticton to shoot the 10-day event and was able to capture this epic image. Araujo nabbed the above image by getting down low and shooting up, saying that it took about 200 attempts to get the right shot.
