Age groupers jumped at the opportunity to race on the proposed triathlon course for the 2012 London Olympics, prompting a sell out of the Dextro Energy Triathlon London.

The amateur version of the Dextro Energy Triathlon London will take place on August 6 and 7 and offers two different course option, with each featuring a sprint and Olympic-distance race.

The Buckingham Palace routes sold out less than 72 hours after entries officially opened, while the Hyde Park routes sold out more than six months out from race day. In total, 4500 amateurs will race in London that weekend.

“In only our third year of operation with this event, the response has been somewhat overwhelming,” Event Director Robert Puestow said in a press release. “We’ve been bombarded with requests for further entries.”

“It’s been a great year so far for us”, he continued. “We have a full house of commercial sponsors as well as having sold out our entries. Now we’re concentrating on the spectator experience to make sure it will be a memorable event. The Expo that took place last year will grow considerably this year and we’re looking at a bit of celebrity stardust to make it all even more exciting.”

The elite event is also highly anticipated. Several countries have chosen to use this race to dish out Olympic qualifying spots.
