The triathlon, sponsored by energy giant EDF, is split into two courses to allow more competitors to take part. On Wednesday, the long course comprised a 2.2km swim and a 115km cycle ride, finishing with a 21km run. The athletes started at EDF’s hydro lake, the Lac de Verney, where the water temperature is between 15 and 17ºC. The cycle ride takes the competitors from Vaujany to Alpe d’Huez, via the Cols of Alpe Grande Serre and Ornon. On foot, racers do three circuits of a 7km track through the centre of Alpe d’Huez and out to the edge of the Sarenne piste.
The short course follows a similar path but is made up of a 1.2km swim, 30km on the road bikes and a 7km run.
