Australia’s Greg Bennett and the United States’ Alicia Kaye earned the victories at today’s Transamerica Chicago Triathlon against top-notch fields. Bennett and Kaye were just two of the nearly 9,000 athletes who took part in the weekend festivities in the Windy City. The 2014 version featured an all-new course, a super sprint race on Divvy bikes and a kids’ race. Also new to this year, the professionals kicked off the action in the morning instead of competing in the afternoon. The event served as the fifth of six races in the Life Time Tri Series, with $40,000 and series’ points on the line for the professionals.
Men’s Race
2013 Life Time Tri Series winner Cameron Dye (USA) led the men out of Lake Michigan ahead of Hunter Kemper (USA), Ben Collins (USA), Timothy O’Donnell (USA) and Bennett. Bennett, the oldest pro in the field at 42, turned in the fastest bike split (52:51) ahead of Dye (52:59) and Collins (53:06). Bennett ended his day with a 33:26 10K to narrowly take the victory in 1:49:02. Kemper dominated the run in 31:45 to propel himself to second at the finish line at 1:49:11. Collins rounded out the podium in third.
Women’s Race
Lauren Brandon (USA) narrowly led Sara McLarty (USA) into T1 thanks to ta swim time of 21:05. Kaye exited the water 20 seconds behind, but quickly made up that gap on the bike. Her 59:17 bike split put her in a solid position to start the run. Kaye rounded out her day with a 38:41 run split to take the win in 2:01:50. The Czech Republic’s Radka Vodickova had a fast run to finish second at 2:04:30, with American Abby Geurink earning a breakout finish in third.
