Shoemaker, Barton Win Boston Triathlon

The Boston Triathlon welcomed athletes from around the country for the sprint-distance event at Dorchester Bay. Athletes swam a half-mile in the Bay, cycled nine miles on Day Boulevard and then ran 4.4 miles along the shore to Pleasure Bay before finishing on a beach.
According to preliminary race results, American short-course specialist Jarrod Shoemaker, a native of Boston, took the men’s win with a 10:16 swim, a 20:14 bike and a 22:15 run, finishing in 53:46. Another Bostonian, Christopher Baird, finished second about 90 seconds back, with Paul Noone earning third.
Newton, Massachusetts’ Jess Barton was the first woman across the finish line in 1:00:43, thanks to an 11:38 swim, a 22:47 bike and a 25:04 run. Rebeccah Wassner, who is in her first season back after having a baby girl, claimed second. Medena Knespl was third.
Triathlon legend Karen Smyers, who was inducted into the USAT Hall of Fame in 2009, also got in on the fun. The 51-year-old had an impressive race and finished with the sixth fastest time.
