New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt will start the 2012 Olympic year on a high note after winning her last two ITU World Championship Series races.
Andrea Hewitt is looking forward to a break, after a momentous season on the world triathlon circuit and before starting the buildup for her next major focus – the London Olympics.
Hewitt, free of niggling injuries for the last two world triathlon series races in Beijing and Yokohama, hit the best form of her six-year career, winning both events, which included the world championship grand final in Beijing, and immediately established herself as a favorite for the Olympic race next July.
Hewitt had an average season for the first half of this year. She was in the lead group in most races without breaking through to win.
But she arrived in Beijing in September for the world series final in the best shape of the season. A niggling foot injury that had troubled her was gone, and she was able to attack with confidence for the first time.
She beat British athlete Helen Jenkins, who won the championships series, and a week later in Yokohama, in searing heat, ran away form Jenkins and top Australian Emma Moffatt.
