While this is not the first year of existence for the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon, it is the first year the race will count in the Lifetime Fitness Series Race to the Toyota Cup final standings.

With the addition, the race serves as the opening event for the series. American Matt Reed will line up and has said he is aiming to defend his series championship. Reed will no doubt be aware of what American Greg Bennett (formerly of Australia) is doing in the race. Bennett won the series championship in 2007 and 2008. Despite the strong presence of Bennett and Reed at these races, youngster Cameron Dye could be considered a strong favorite. Dye won the St. Anthony’s Triathlon back on April 25th and he beat out both Reed and Bennett for that title.

Missing from the women’s start list is American Sarah Haskins. Haskins, who is the defending Lifetime Fitness Triathlon Series champion for the women, has had a strong presence in ITU racing this year and will likely choose to race in several of the other five series races. With Haskins not starting, the favorite is American Rebeccah Wassner. Wassner has the run speed to outkick any other female on the start list. It will all come down to whether or not Wassner has fully recovered from a foot injury she has been struggling with throughout 2010. Another American, Laura Bennett, has had a stellar start to the year, and is fresh off of a top-10 finish at the Hy-Vee Elite Cup Triathlon on June 13.
