California’s wine country provided a picturesque backdrop for athletes from around the world Saturday at the 2019 Ironman Santa Rosa triathlon. Jan Stepinski (M25-29) from Palo Alto, Calif. and Ailsa MacDonald (F35-39) from St. Albert, Alta., Canada took the top honors with finishing times of 8:52:03 and 10:16:43, respectively.
The event saw nearly 2,000 athletes representing 44 states and 49 countries, territories, and regions start the race. Athletes took on a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run through beautiful Sonoma County, into the heart of the world-famous wine regions of the Dry Creek, Alexander, and Russian River valleys and the quaint communities of Windsor, Geyersville, and Healdsburg. The swim took place in Lake Sonoma, while the bike course was full of rolling hills through the famous wine country and its quaint towns. Athletes then enjoyed a three-loop run course where there were plenty of opportunities for cheering from spectators and family members. The day ended with an electric finish line on the north side of the Courthouse Square.
