With the clock ticking down on 2017, pros and coaches share resolutions for the new year.

When the champagne pops and the ball drops, what will your goal be? New Year’s resolutions allow us to set our intentions for the year ahead. Whether it’s to eat less ice cream or do more hill repeats, stating those goals can help us chart a course to our best year yet.

Need some inspiration for your own 2018 resolutions? We asked the pros and coaches of our sport to share their intentions for the new year. Their goals range from small to big, personal to professional, and serious to way fun.

Lesley Paterson
My New Year’s resolution is to be more engaged in the community of triathlon and endurance sport. As a pro, it can all become very insular and self-focused, so I want to develop more relationships and really enjoy the friendships I’ve built through this sport! I also look forward to giving back in some way—passing on advice about all the hard lessons I’ve learned along the way!

Ben Kanute
I have not made any resolutions just yet, but each year I do try to be better than the last. This does not necessarily mean just getting faster in triathlon, it also means as a person. I think as triathletes we are good at analyzing races and how our year went, and I try to use that skill going into the New Year to help improve all aspects of myself.

Linsey Corbin
My new year’s resolutions:

  1. Travel somewhere new
  2. Better time management—I was horrible in 2017!
  3. Read 12 books
  4. Try not to be so critical and hard on myself after a tough day at the office.
  5. Start a business
  6. Learn something new

Sarah True
To finally master the art of tightening lids properly, thus driving my husband nuts less frequently. And to qualify for Kona.

Coach Lance Watson
My resolutions:
-To coach every single one of my athletes to a personal best in at least one discipline.
-To incorporate 3 new technologies into my coaching repertoire
-To qualify at least 75 LifeSport athletes for World Championships
-To compete in an Ironman in my new age group, 50-54.

Mirinda Carfrae
My resolution is to stay in the moment, in both training and at home. With life getting a little more hectic with baby Isabelle added into the mix, I have been finding myself falling into the trap of constantly thinking about what I need to be doing next, rather than focusing on what I am currently doing. Izzy is going to grow up fast, and I don’t want to miss a thing.

Terenzo Bozzone
For 2018, my resolution is to try and always stay in control, whether it be with my preparation, competition or life. I know if I am in control, I will be making the best decisions to be the best possible me.

Coach Julie Dibens
My resolution is normally to go as long as I can into the year without getting dropped by my athletes on rides.

Katie Zaferes
My New Year’s resolution is to listen more to people with intention. Cut out the distractions, fully engage and not try to problem solve—just listen and connect.

Coach Jesse Kropelnicki
My resolution is to improve my ability to help athletes I coach reduce the stress and self-imposed pressures they apply to themselves. “Strive for perfect, but judge against consistently ‘good’” is what we are looking for.

Lionel Sanders

  1. Quit smoking…just kidding.
  2. Turn the screens off two hours before bed. I often have trouble sleeping, so I would like to see if this would help.
  3. Shoot par at my local nine-hole golf course…this will be the hardest goal to achieve yet!

Carfrae and former pro Patrick Mckeon break down the iconic course in Chattanooga, who looks good for the pro women's race, and their predictions for how the day will play out.
