In 2011, first-year pro Jesse Thomas, a former Stanford track star riding a borrowed bike and sporting drugstore aviators, came out of nowhere to win the notorious Wildflower Long Course Triathlon. He showed promise as an amateur triathlete in 2007, then left the sport for three years to pursue his MBA before returning to the sport in 2010. Outside of triathlon, he and his wife (pro distance runner Lauren Fleshman) own and run Picky Bars, a company that sells gluten- and dairy-free energy bars. Since his first Wildflower win, the Oregonian has developed into one of the strongest Americans (and runners) on the 70.3 and Rev3 circuits.
