Bermuda’s Flora Duffy absolutely rocked the 2017 triathlon season—and she was rewarded with $300,000 worth of prize money for her efforts, according to USA Triathlon’s prize money leaderboard. Duffy’s big-time earnings are a reflection of the opportunity that lies with doing well in the ITU World Triathlon Series (WTS). She won six WTS races and then earned $83,500 for her final first-place ranking in the series. She also closed out her season with victories at the XTERRA World Championship ($20,000) and the Island House Invitational Triathlon ($60,000). Her total of $297,703 is nearly $80,000 more than second-place earner Daniela Ryf of Switzerland—who won both the Ironman and 70.3 World Championships. ITU athletes (Javier Gomez, Mario Mola, Katie Zaferes, and Ashleigh Gentle, respectively), make up spots No. 3 through 6. Male Ironman world champion Patrick Lange sits at No. 7, with Kona runner-up athlete Lionel Sanders (CAN) sitting in eighth. ITU athlete Kristian Blummenfelt (NOR) was the ninth-highest earner with Kona podium finisher Sarah Crowley (AUS) earning the final spot in the top 10.
It’s worth noting these are just the prize money totals, and aren’t an exact reflection of the total income earned by the pros. Sponsorship deals aren’t often made public, so those earnings aren’t reflected. For many of the top athletes, there totals are likely much higher.
