Ironman today announced a partnership with SuperFrog to become the first qualifier race for the Military Division of the 2015 Ironman World Championship triathlon in Kona. Three races, starting with the 2014 SuperFrog triathlon on Sept. 28 in Coronado, Calif., will serve as official Military Division qualifiers for the 2015 Ironman World Championship. The other two races will be announced at a later date.
The SuperFrog triathlon was designed by Navy SEALs in 1979 to help SEALs prepare for what was then the newly-created Ironman triathlon in Hawaii and to provide the Navy Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) and SEAL Teams a physical training event that was both multi-faceted and competitive. The event, which is half the distance of the Ironman World Championship, is the oldest existing race of this distance.
“Since our inception, members of the military have raced with Ironman and have been an integral part of our passionate athlete community. We are thrilled to partner with SuperFrog to help further Ironman’s long-standing relationship with the military service and create the first qualifier for the Military Division of the Ironman World Championship,” said Andrew Messick, Chief Executive Officer for Ironman.
“SuperFrog was designed by and for Navy SEALs. The race was organized to get them ready to do the Ironman in Hawaii,” said Moki Martin, Founder/Race Producer of SuperFrog, Inc. “Our triathlon has always been about the environment – training and operating in cold ocean surf, hot road temperatures, and a soul-searching sand and pavement run. Superfrog has always been about character, effort and satisfaction.”
The 2014 SupeFrog Triathlon on Sept. 28 in Coronado, Calif. will offer 20 qualifying slots to the Military Division of the 2015 Ironman World Championship. The slots are reserved for current military personnel from any nation. Registration is open for the race at Superfrogtriathlon.com.
