Rescue crews have been scouring La Jolla Cove in La Jolla, Calif. for a man who was reported missing late Saturday afternoon.
San Diego lifeguards received a report of the missing swimmer just before 6 p.m. They searched for several hours before turning the operation over to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Coast Guard officials said they were using a helicopter and a small boat to scour the area between Scripps Pier and La Jolla Cove, where the swimmer apparently left shore sometime around 4:30 p.m.
He was reported missing by a friend, who told authorities the swimmer was late returning from his planned long-distance swim.
