After three races, Americans Matt Reed and Becky Lavelle lead the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon Series. The Los Angeles Triathlon (Oct. 4) and the Toyota U.S. Open Triathlon (Oct. 11) will decide the winners of the series.
Reed’s lead comes as the result of victories at the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon in Minneapolis (July 11) and at the Chicago Triathlon (Aug. 30). Reed finished second to Australian Greg Bennett at the Nautica New York City Triathlon (July 26). Reed sits comfortably at the top as a result of Bennett and fellow American Andy Potts being unable to complete all three races. Bennett was not present for the Chicago Triathlon due to injuries suffered in a car accident in Boulder, Colo. Potts started the Chicago Triathlon, but was sent to the hospital after suffering injuries after coliding with an age-group athlete on the bike course.
Lavelle holds a slim lead over American Rebeccah Wassner. While Lavelle has yet to win a race in the series, she claims the top spot in the points standings as a result of placing on the podium in all three races. Wassner sits in second due to her win at the New York City Triathlon. American Sarah Haskins did not compete in New York, but sits comfortably in third due to wins at the races in Minneapolis and Chicago.
