Data lovers rejoice: Endurance training site TrainingPeaks has acquired a math-based tool in Best Bike Split, a software platform that allows athletes and coaches to create a precise power-based plan to use during races or training.
To execute the wattage plan you need to hit your goal race times or to hit targets in training, Best Bike Split uses an algorithm that takes your power data, equipment choices, course topography and race day conditions into account. Start by entering your height, weight, FTP (functional threshold power) and maximum heart rate along with the specifics of your bike, wheels and components. Then select an existing course or create your own and Best Bike Split will calculate your drag coefficient, rolling resistance and mechanical loss.
There are several other variables mixed in like altitude changes and wind direction along with your position on the bike. With all these variables accounted for, the goal of Best Bike Split is to give athletes as much information as possible to maximize performance on race day.
In addition, TrainingPeaks Co-Founder CEO Gear Fisher also said on the TP blog that there are many useful features outside of time predictions. “My favorite is that it uses a high-performance optimization engine to create a pacing chart and pacing cheat-sheet that you can print and put on your bike stem for reference during the race. If I wanted to, I could have uploaded a detailed plan to my Garmin that would show me what power to hold for every section during the race.”
The integrative of “predictive planning” is what Fisher calls “the next evolution of training” to go along with the science-focused training that TrainingPeaks is best known for.
