Pediatric cancer research was the big winner at the recent Nautica Malibu Triathlon, with $1,009,651 raised for the Pediatric Cancer Research Program at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.
The Nautica Malibu Triathlon has raised more than $3.7 million for pediatric cancer research at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles in the four years the hospital has been the beneficiary of the event. The triathlon event was held Sept. 12 and included a half-mile swim in the Pacific Ocean, an 18-mile bicycle ride along picturesque Pacific Coast Highway and a four-mile run along the sands of Zuma Beach.
Teri Hatcher (“Desperate Housewives”) led the field of celebrity competitors, including Josh Hopkins (“Cougar Town”), James Marsden (“X-Men”), Julie Bowen (“Modern Family”), Rachel Griffiths (“Brothers and Sisters”) and more. Entertainment journalist Nancy O’Dell served as the emcee for the awards ceremony, and “American Idol” Finalist Kimberly Caldwell sang the National Anthem.
Fund raising teams from the entertainment and corporate world combined to raise a majority of the funds for this annual event. The top fund raisers from the entertainment community included: Disney with $220,000; NBC/Universal with $101,631; Sony with $50,807; Warner Bros. with $47,728; DreamWorks with $36,315. The top fund raisers from the corporate world included: Childrens Hospital Los Angeles with $175,513; Amgen with $70,000; Nestlé with $35,840; Johnson & Johnson with $32,972; Penske Motor Group with $26,115.
