Low water levels and other obstacles have sunk hopes of Shoreview holding its Turtleman Triathlon this summer.
After three years of challenges, race officials say Minnesota’s oldest triathlon can’t weather more hurdles. In hopes of salvaging chances of a comeback in 2013, the 2012 competition has been canceled.
“It’s a disappointment, from a community perspective,” Shoreview City Manager Terry Schwerm said of the decision. “It’s been voted one of the most popular (triathlons) in the state.”
Prompting the tough choice was another year of low water levels on Turtle Lake — the home of the race’s swimming leg — coupled with a pattern of unfortunate events in the race’s recent history, said Mark Stange, race director.
