Mary Beth Ellis, one of the top American Ironman athletes, crashed her bike while riding in Cozumel on the evening of Monday, Sept. 9, according to TeamTBB.
The eight-time Ironman winner reportedly sustained trauma to her shoulder and is on her way home to Colorado to seek treatment with specialists.
“I am completely devastated, especially so close to the Ironman World Championships,” Ellis said in a statement on the TeamTBB website. “But, I’m happy to be walking and talking. We’re working with some of the top orthopedists in the country to address the injury, and I’ll be working hard to get back on the racecourse as soon as possible. I’ve been down before, and I always get back up thanks to the support of my wonderful friends, family, fans and brand partners.”
Ellis also left this message on her Facebook page. She last competed at the Ironman North American Championship in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada on August 18 and easily took the win. She finished fifth at the 2012 Ironman World Championship and was a strong contender to take the title at the 2013 Kona race, which is 31 days away.
Ellis and her teammates have been training in Cozumel on-and-off throughout the year.
