She’s trying to qualify for the Ironman Triathlon World Championships.

After a disappointing 27th place showing at the ING New York City Marathon last year, Arizona marathoner Sally Meyerhoff is reassessing her goals.

“I came away from New York borderline hating myself,” Meyerhoff recalled. “I didn’t enjoy the journey going into New York at all. I felt I had let myself down and every single person who supported me. I even doubted if I wanted to keep doing it anymore. I had a lot of negative thoughts.”

Meyerhoff recently rediscovered her love of running a month after New York when she won the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Oahu, Hawaii. Since then, she’s decided to compete in a grueling Ironman triathlon race. She’s now coached by triathlon coach Adam Zucco and hopes to qualify to race in the Ironman Triathlon World Championships just 14 weeks before the Olympic Trials.

“This will help me mix things up and get me fitter,” she said. “Training for a marathon almost feels like nothing compared to an Ironman. I’m doing my training more by feel. I didn’t want running to be a job and be miserable doing it.”
