Australia’s Luke Bell talked to one of his hometown newspapers about what it will take to become a world champion and how he’s spending his off season in Victoria.
His attitude to life is to enjoy family and friends and enjoy the work.
Because his life as a professional triathlete is work, a job like any other, albeit a globetrotting job where the office consists of the vast outdoors and stunning scenery.
That’s the good part. The downside is a seven day a week schedule, no Friday nights out with the mates and sticking to a strict diet that doesn’t include pizza the lot.
Just the same, Luke Bell wouldn’t have it any other way. One of the elite competitors in this sport, Luke is in Busselton for the Western Australian Ironman competition on the weekend.
The aim is simple, says Luke. “You want to be the world champion. Your year is geared around that.
“You have to make sure that you can get up and do a 180k bike race. So I need my 8 to ten hours sleep; I need to make sure my nutrition is right.
Christmas brings some time off he says but just same, he’ll do one or two sessions a day, “to keep the body within that 80 to 90 percent of fitness because once the new year rolls around, you’re back into racing”.
