Australia’s Mike LeRoux used a 6:31:45 double marathon to overtake Jonas Colting for the overall win, while the United States’ Amber Monforte cruised through day three to maintain her lead and take the victory.
LeRoux used a 2:16:04 6.2-mile swim, a 5:12:40 90-mile bike ride, a 7:44:51 171.4-mile bike ride and a 6:31:45 double marathon to earn the fifth fastest time in history at 21:55:57. LeRoux, who works as a civil engineer in Australia, commented on the final miles of the race.
“I went out hard in the run today,” LeRoux explained. “My team let me know what my lead was all the time. I didn’t want to have to race at the end. No surprises… in Canada (2010 Ultraman Canada) I had to race the last 21km and that was brutal.”
Sweden’s Jonas Colting posted the fifth fastest run time to earn second, with Ultraman rookie Slater Fletcher of the United States earning third.
Like LeRoux, Monforte used a solid run to earn the win. Her 7:47:29 run today gave her a 24:08:11 overall time, which was good enough to earn a new world championship record. The win caps off a busy couple of months for Monforte. She finished the Ironman World Championships in 10:50, won her age group at the Xterra World Championships and spent time training for this race. The United States’ Biscay earned second, with another American, eight-time champion Shanna Armstrong finishing third.
