Sunday’s Leon’s Triathlon will feature inflatable boats along the course to give swimmers the option of taking a break.
“There’s really no stopping while swimming,” Leon Wolek said of what is often the most treacherous section of any triathlon. “You still got to spend energy treading water.
“That’s why people are more concerned about the swimming part than any other in the race.”
For this year’s Leon Triathlon, which will take place Sunday morning at Wolf Lake Memorial Park, organizers plan to take out some of the bite from the big, bad Wolf Lake, where the 0.9-mile swim will take place.
“Ron Kurth and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department dive and rescue team are going to half Body Glove rescue tube (inflatable boats) along the swim course,” Wolek said. “If swimmers get tired, they could use them to rest instead of being taken out of the race by the rescue team.”
This weekend’s race will be the third part of the second act of Leon’s Triathlon, which Wolek started in his hometown of Hobart in 1983 before moving it to Hammond in 1990. After the race was discontinued in 1996, it returned in 2010.
