Ironman today revealed that Chattanooga, Tenn. and St. George, Utah are the final two candidates to host the 2021 Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Both cities are familiar names on the 70.3 circuit. Chattanooga was the last city to host the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in the United States (in 2017) and continues to host Ironman and 70.3 events on an annual basis, while St. George has hosted the Ironman 70.3 North American Championships for several years.
“Of the many fine cities that vied for consideration to host the 2021 Ironman 70.3 World Championship, both Chattanooga and St. George stood out,” said Andrew Messick, President & Chief Executive Officer of Ironman in a press release. “We are excited to move forward with these two finalists as year after year each city shines by providing world championship caliber venues and events for their athletes.”
While the world championship event has taken place in September in recent years, the 2020 Ironman 70.3 World Championships (to be held in Taupo, New Zealand) are slated to take place on November 28-29. It is unclear at this point if the 2021 race will take place in September, November, or at another point on the calendar. The date is significant as it affects several athletes (and notably professionals) who may compete in the Ironman World Championship in October.
The Ironman 70.3 World Championships began an annual global rotation in 2014 after being hosted exclusively in Clearwater, Fla. (2006-2010) and Henderson, Nev. (2011-2013). This year’s event will take place in Nice, France, with the 2020 Ironman 70.3 World Championship following in Taupo, New Zealand.
