As is the case with many Ironmans, the newly-announced Ironman Lake Tahoe sold out in less than 24 hours. The event, which was announced last week, will take place on Sept. 22, 2013. Registration opened at noon PDT on Monday, June 18 and was closed by first thing Tuesday morning, taking less than 24 hours to sell out.
Rumors about the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) introducing a California Ironman have been circulating for months. Ultimately it was the Lake Tahoe region that won the right to host the race. Lake Tahoe’s altitude of just over 6,200 feet didn’t deter 2,500 athletes from committing to the event 15 months ahead of time.
“Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty and experience in hosting world-class endurance events have made it one of the world’s most appealing sports destinations,” said Steve Meckfessel, Managing Director of Global Race Operations for WTC, when WTC announced the event. “The launch of a full-distance Ironman event in California has been a long time coming. We’re confident this race will develop into a cornerstone of the global Ironman Series.”
