Rumors are circulating that an Ironman event could be coming to Williamsburg, Va. in September or October of 2013.

For about a decade, Williamsburg bed-and-breakfast owner Bob Tubbs has worked to bring the Ironman triathlon to the Historic Triangle.

Now, that effort seems to be getting traction.

In conjunction with a recent request for proposals issued by the World Triathlon Corp. as part of a search for a Mid-Atlantic Ironman venue, Steve Meckfessel, who is in charge of event licensing, visited Williamsburg to check out the area’s “assets” and potential as a host locality, Tubbs said.

He basically said, if we can put something solid together his preference is to do something in Williamsburg,” Tubbs said.

If selected, Tubbs said the swimming portion of the event would be held in the James River in the vicinity of Kingsmill Resort which would serve as a transition point to the bike race. He said route locations for the remainder of the race haven’t been confirmed and he didn’t want to “spook” anyone by divulging further details prematurely.
