Last weekend’s Hurricane Irene left 14 miles of the Ironman Lake Placid bike course and 4 miles of the run course unpassable, according to Ironman.com.
The aftermath resulted in the worst damage to Essex County since the mid-19th century. Race director Jeff Edwards said at its peak, the river was flowing about eight feet above the level of the road, and the course’s iconic River Road “became the river for about three miles.” The bridge at the ski jumps will be assessed for structural damage once a FEMA crew clears away the debris. In the village of Keene, one of the areas hit the worst by Irene, a volunteer fire station completely washed away.
The Ironman Foundation has donated $5,000, and they are reaching out to athletes to make donations to help the community that gives so much back to the Lake Placid race.
