Two-time Ford Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander has confirmed that he will be racing at Ironman Australia on May 1, 2011.
The move likely comes as a response to the World Triathlon Corporation’s new Kona Qualifying rules. Although Alexander earns an automatic entry into the 2011 Ironman World Championship race because he has won the race within the last five years, he must first “validate” his entry by competing in an Ironman event leading into Kona.
Alexander, who won back-to-back Ironman World Championships in Hawaii in 2008 and 2009, will race at Ironman Australia for the first time since he made his Ironman debut at the event in 2007. That was the last Ironman Alexander competed in outside of the Ironman World Championship.
Alexander talked to Ironman.com about the opportunity to race in his home country:
“I am very excited to be racing Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie next year. It is an awesome venue for a major international event and from a personal standpoint, having raced all over the world; it is just great to be racing at home in NSW. I look forward to seeing everyone there.”
