The 2011 Challenge Wanaka Triathlon is set to welcome more than 1,200 athletes to one of the most scenic courses in the world in a small lakeside town in New Zealand’s Southern Alps. The iron-distance race is set to take place Jan. 15, 2011 and will feature a few top professionals.
The women’s field will feature defending champion Gina Crawford of New Zealand and Rebekah Keat of Australia. On the men’s side, the favorite will be recently crowned Ironman Western Australia champion Courtney Ogden of Australia.
“We’re delighted with the sustained growth of Challenge Wanaka that continues to attract more athletes to the exciting sport of endurance triathlon,” said race director, Victoria Murray-Orr. “This year we’re celebrating our fifth anniversary and we’ve seen a 600% growth since that first race back in 2007. This growth is echoed through the Challenge Family series of events. There are now 12 races in the series, including another one in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia’s Challenge Cairns, which will take place for the first time next June.”
