Ironman has opened casting for its new 10-episode broadcast series titled “Ironman: Quest for Kona,” to run in the fall of 2017. The show will profile 10 athletes from around the world (each starring in their own 30-minute episode) who are attempting to qualify for the Ironman World Championship.
“We are always looking for new opportunities to showcase the extraordinary physical abilities and inspirational journeys of our competitors,” Christopher Stadler, Ironman’s chief marketing officer, said in a press release. “This documentary-style program allows us to go into greater depth as we share the sacrifices and commitment that Ironman athletes demonstrate to reach their goals.
Each episode will follow one charismatic contender as they take on a specific Ironman qualifying event, and the show will also be capturing the scenery, local culture and unique athletic challenges within each setting—the show will give you a good feel for each qualifying event featured. While the show may not necessarily show each athlete qualifying, it will highlight Ironman’s motto (“Anything is possible”) and show the test of endurance and perseverance.
Self-shot footage will be used to help capture each athlete’s real-time journey—it will be a supplement to the broadcast content. Ironman says that the show “takes aspirational athletes and puts their mission front and center, inviting viewers to experience the personal highs and lows of each pursuit.”
Are you training for an Ironman, and think you have a story to tell? Casting is open for the series globally, with the first round of submissions due by Feb. 6. The application is two parts: a short video (less than 2 minutes) that conveys why you should be one of the 10 featured athletes; and an application questionnaire. Ironman will consider both the video and an applicant’s unique questionnaire answers in making the final selections.
In the U.S., audiences can watch the series through NBCUniversal distribution, and global audiences can watch it through Infront Sports and Media distribution on top international broadcasters. Air dates and channels for each market will be released in the coming months, Ironman says.
Note that this is not an offer of bonus slots to the Ironman World Championship—the show is an opportunity for athletes to share their journeys of competing at Ironman qualifying events. You can apply at Ironman.com/questforkona.
