Vermont town to host age group and sprint national champs this summer and next.
Nearly 2,000 athletes and 4,500 spectators are expected to descend on Burlington for this summer’s USA Triathlon Age Group and Sprint National Championships, the Vermont Convention Bureau said Tuesday.
The bureau, a division of the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, landed a two-year commitment last year from USA Triathlon to hold the grueling, multi-event competitions this summer and in 2012.
Qualified triathletes will compete for age-group national titles and spots on Team USA for the 2012 ITU World Championships in New Zealand. Races include a 1,500-meter swim, a 40K bike ride and a 10K run.
This year’s events will take place Aug. 20 at venues around Lake Champlain and Battery Park, extending to South Burlington and Shelburne.
