Another group of athletes is back on Hilton Head Island this weekend, all of them gunning for the coveted Coconut Monkeys.
“They’re very, very popular,” said Alfred Olivetti of the On On Tri sports shop. “We have people coming down on vacation every year trying to win one.”
The monkeys are awarded to the winners of the Beach Bum Triathlon, which makes its return for the 20th year on Saturday. The race features a 500-meter swim, a 6-mile beach bike and a 3-mile beach run.
“It’s truly unique in that manner, that it’s an all-beach triathlon,” Olivetti said.
Olivetti, the triathlon’s director, is expecting more than 200 people to take part in this year’s race, just slightly higher than the number On On Tri drew in 2012.
