Alex McDonald Recounts His Bike Accident

Professional triathlete and medical doctor Alex McDonald was involved in an accident with a pick-up truck while riding his bike in his hometown of Durham, N.C. on Thursday, Feb. 24. Just a few days after the collision, which left him with several serious injuries, McDonald posted a blog post on Alexmmtri.com thanking everyone for their support and giving a detailed breakdown of how the crash happened.

First off I must tell you that I have been truly overwhelmed with all the love, support, positive vibes, flowers and food that I have received over the last few days. Not only from friends and family, but old acquaintances since lost and even complete strangers. This support has truly been humbling yet also greatly appreciated. Everyone has been asking for the story and I have recounted it numerous times, but just to help set the record straight I thought I would let you all know in writing. I must warn you it may be disturbing to some readers.

On Thurs Feb 24th while riding my bike, a truck hit me. I remember a crunch as my body hit the bumper and flying through the air. I don’t remember landing, but as I was flying thru the air, I noticed my left lower leg was flapping around like a rag doll. I lost consciousness, albeit it briefly, and the next thing I remember was opening my eyes as I was spread eagle lying on my back on the pavement. There were several people standing around me at that point, including firemen as well as the driver and passenger from the truck that hit me. I asked them to call my wife, Ashley, which they did and once the paramedics arrived I insisted they take me to Duke University Hospital, since that is were my wife works and I live very close to there. I think because I was mentally coherent they were not as worried about a brain or neck injury.
