2015 Ironman Legacy And Lottery Winners Announced

Ironman announced today the 205 lucky athletes who will have the chance to race the 2015 Ironman World Championship through either the Ironman Legacy (100 age-group athletes) or Ironman Lottery (100 age-group athletes and five physically challenged age-group athletes). Because qualifying for Ironman Hawaii is so competitive, Ironman created both programs to allow all Ironman triathletes the chance to race in Kona.

Ironman Legacy

The Ironman Legacy program was created to give loyal Ironman athletes the chance to race in Kona once in their lifetimes. To be eligible, athletes must have completed a minimum of 12 full-distance Ironman-branded races, have never started the Ironman World Championship, have completed at least one Ironman event in each of the 2013 and 2014 seasons and be registered for an Ironman event in 2015.

This year’s Legacy winners, ranging in age from 30 to 67, come from 11 different countries across the globe. Of the 100 athletes, 63 are from the U.S., followed by 18 from Australia, seven from Canada and four from Great Britain. Other countries being represented this year are Singapore, Japan, Germany, New Zealand, Panama, Brazil and France. The U.S. athletes will be traveling to Hawaii from 25 different states.

Ironman Lottery

The Ironman Lottery program has been around for more than 30 years because Ironman’s co-founders, John and Judy Collins, wanted to provide athletes of all abilities the opportunity to participate in Ironman Hawaii. The lucky athletes chosen in this year’s lottery range in age from 20 to 74 and represent 16 countries. Included on the list are a 70-year-old U.S. Navy veteran who’s a two-time cancer survivor, and a 42-year-old triathlon coach from the Philippines. Included in the five physically challenged lottery winners are a double arm amputee.
